Basketball in South Australia: Leading the Way with XPS

4 MIN READING

Basketball in South Australia is setting the standard for how technology can transform the game. With the adoption of XPS Network, NBL1 clubs and the metro & country divisions of Basketball South Australia are working smarter, connecting better, and raising standards for athletes and coaches across the state pathway.

A State-Wide Step Forward

From Adelaide’s NBL1 clubs to country programs spanning hundreds of kilometres, South Australia is demonstrating how technology can deliver real value for basketball at every level. By centralising coaching, communication, wellness and performance tracking through XPS, the state has created a more unified and efficient system that benefits administrators, coaches, athletes, and parents alike.

The big thing is the time-saving. The admin, no more jumping on and off spreadsheets, looking at this list and that list, the platform has become a one-stop shop.

- Will Smith, General Manager of Norwood Flames

That time-saving isn’t just helping professional staff, it’s transforming the experience for volunteers, who can spend less time buried in admin and more time actually on the court with athletes and more time on athlete development.

Connecting a Dispersed Basketball Community

SA Country Basketball faces a unique challenge: distance. Athletes can live five or six hours apart, and keeping them engaged was once a constant struggle.

The platform helps our athletes connect, it allows us to roll out skill sessions, strength and conditioning programs, and individual drills they can work on from home. It’s been really beneficial for both the program and the athletes.

- Danny Millard, Executive Officer, SA Country

Critical areas such as child safety are also addressed. As Sam Adams, Pathways Performance Leader, Basketball SA, pointed out: "Now we can reach coaches, athletes, and parents in a secure, centralised, safe space, which is so much better for everyone."

Smarter Coaching Through Data

Modern basketball demands more than effort and intuition, it thrives on data. Coaches and high performance staff are using XPS to monitor training loads, track well-being, and make informed decisions that protect athlete health, while pushing performance.

I can see what athletes are doing in their own time, whether they’re undertraining or overtraining and have conversations based on that. It’s not just about Xs and Os; it’s about connecting with athletes on a deeper level and helping them manage their training safely.

Athletes, too, are buying in. The visual feedback tools within XPS give athletes a clearer picture of their progress, helping them better understand their bodies and build confidence in their development.

Raising Standards for Coaches

Technology is also reshaping how coaches teach. From session planning to video analysis, the tools inside XPS make preparation and delivery faster, smarter, and more engaging for athletes.

Jason Williams, Basketball Director at Sturt Sabres, admitted he was initially “old school”:

Now it’s just click and drag, and you’ve got a session plan in five minutes. The video tools are incredible, too. Athletes love watching clips, and being able to show them exactly what they did right or wrong is such a valuable teaching tool.

- Jason Williams, Basketball Director, Sturt Sabres

From Grassroots to Elite

The true power of XPS lies in its ability to serve all levels of the game simultaneously. At Norwood Flames, the platform is used throughout their whole pathway, from U10s through to their senior NBL1 teams. In the state federation, it connects athletes across both metropolitan and country divisions. The same platform that helps a volunteer U12s coach build a training session is also supporting elite players as they prepare for national representation.

Once the onboarding was done, rolling over from one season to the next was as simple as clicking buttons. Now, everyone, from the youngest juniors to the senior teams, is connected and organized through the platform.

- Will Smith, General Manager of Norwood Flames

South Australia Leading the Nation

By embracing XPS Network across its federation and leading clubs, South Australia has built a culture of efficiency, safety, and connected development, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
